There are no random battles and a number of encounters are avoidable based on how you progress. Memories of Undertale.. Already an instant favorite of mine. You get very attached to the characters, there is a significant sense of curiosity throughout the story (is very rich), they throw comedy into the mix on multiple occasions, and it is already one of my favorite games. If you're here because of Undertale and questioning whether or not it's worth it, it is, and it's arguably better than Undertale.
