I've done side-by-side comparisons in auto mode for both applications, and SilverFast is consistently so awful, that I wonder if this software isn't built on joke code. I've wasted hundreds of hours scanning old photos and now realised why so many of them looked terrible.
to Ze De Boni:Wow, you reminds me of people from that *PRO* photographer site called luminous landscape. Actually it's not that complicated nor does it take so-called "professional" skill to do it right, because even the professional relies on commercial solution.A friend of mine runs film processing service so I have the luck to actually try his gadget and I can tell you there's huge gap between commercial solution and the consumer one, to be more clear the commercial solution software is bundled with it's hardware, that's why I think comparing retail scanning software miss the point.By the way, I really hope to leave some useful information rather than hollow debates, but those films I'd recommend discontinued long time ago so maybe inevitably this topic will end as another hollow debate. :)
Like many others I've enjoyed & been helped by this article.I have spent many hours scanning my old B & W negs going back to the 60's with my Canoscan 9000F, I read so many bad things about SF that came with it.My experience of 120 & 35mm film is that, as several people have mentioned, the upscaling that takes place about the baseline resolution (?1200dpi) and I've ended up using the semi-expert section of the Canon software at 2400 dpi with 'high quality' turned off and dust removal ditto - they slowed it up too much and to be honest the quality was, shall we be kind and say, "variable", that it's easier to fettle the 6 of 36 that were worth keeping (my old rule of thumb) in my normal photo editor (FastStone). Above that the detail seemed to get that over-processed digital look. Sharpening was done with low diam - 4pxls - but big quantity up to and over 100. This seems to retain a reasonably realistic film look with adequate sharpness.Hope this helpsBest wishesDV
Regarding sharpness. To get best sharpness you need to test and "calibrate". I made high res scans of 4x5 tranprencies on Epson V750 using the holder. Discovered that 4 layers of basic paper under the holder raised it a touch and scans were much sharper. No DOF on a scanner bed. Same held true to other formats. In the end I just stuck thing shirt cardboard on all the holders for sharpest results.I have used all of these scanner programs and most prefer VueScan. Only one I trusted on auto. Once you figure it out it is great and supports almost all scanners and systems. Also many manufacturers take month (maybe years _epson) to update software for new operating systems. Hamrick is always first and saves us time and time again. Plus cost. Silverfast is $$$. VueScan is a better value.
Yes, I appreciate the subject and efforts of the author, too. However, flatbed scanners cannot live up to the quality of film scanners such as the Nikon Coolscan 5000/4000 ED and thus make the comparison of the scan software a bit questionable with regard to the output quality, IMO. You surely can compare handling, options etc but quality- wise the hardware is the limiting factor and the software differences are levelled out. If I had no a film scanner I rather would go for photographing the slides via a macro setup than using a flatbed scanner. If you just need small images for the web etc, it doesn't matter that much which hardware option you chose and which software you use . On HQ film or even drum scanners the software differences are more evident. For archiving my best slides, I definetly would go for the best hardware, too. Just my 2 cents.
The software was upgraded to keep up with the available hardware, so CorelDRAW X8 introduced the ability to switch between a desktop and a touchscreen setup, as well as support for pressure-sensitive styluses and devices. This gave designers full control of their brushstrokes, unlocking full creative potential.
Managing interference in an increasingly wireless world requires a magic touch with spectrum analysis (signal analysis) efficiency. Spectral constraints translate to cumbersome testing. Cut through the complexity with powerful hardware and software that help you overcome interference challenges.
Skylum Aurora HDR is software designed specifically for high dynamic range images, offering the ability to merge and tone map individual RAW files. Like many other HDR plugins, Aurora makes ample use of AI. Compared with its peers, however, Aurora runs miles ahead in terms of usability and quality. Much of its success can be attributed to prominent HDR photographer Trey Ratcliff, whose workflow forms the underlying basis for the program. That sort of creative and practical insight offers Aurora a real leg up.
Boris FX Optics 2022, which we recently reviewed and is available for $149, comes loaded with 160 filters, thousands of presets, and powerful visual effects plugins including a new particle generator that can create photo-real sci-fi effects including smoke, fire, water, sparkles, dust, lasers, galaxies, and more.
In our recent guide on Lightroom presets, we were committed to only sharing those you could find for free. Had we opened the door to paid options, there is no question Exposure X7 would have appeared high on the list. Exposure X7 is a powerful standalone photo editor with a uniquely enjoyable interface but, like many of the above choices, can be and is perhaps more effectively utilized as a plugin. There are many reasons to recommend this software, but its over 500 gorgeous presets warrant special attention.
This Architectural Specification provides authors of specifications, software developers, and content developers with a common reference for interoperable text manipulation on the World Wide Web, building on the Universal Character Set, defined jointly by the Unicode Standard and ISO/IEC 10646. Topics addressed include use of the terms 'character', 'encoding' and 'string', a reference processing model, choice and identification of character encodings, character escaping, and string indexing.Unicode Security Considerations [UTR36]Because Unicode contains such a large number of characters and incorporates the varied writing systems of the world, incorrect usage can expose programs or systems to possible security attacks. This is especially important as more and more products are internationalized. This document describes some of the security considerations that programmers, system analysts, standards developers, and users should take into account, and provides specific recommendations to reduce the risk of problems.Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) [WCAG]Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) covers a wide range of recommendations for making web content more accessible. Following these guidelines will make content accessible to a wider range of people with disabilities, including blindness and low vision, deafness and hearing loss, learning disabilities, cognitive limitations, limited movement, speech disabilities, photosensitivity and combinations of these. Following these guidelines will also often make your web content more usable to users in general.Authoring Tool Accessibility Guidelines (ATAG) 2.0 [ATAG]This specification provides guidelines for designing web content authoring tools that are more accessible for people with disabilities. An authoring tool that conforms to these guidelines will promote accessibility by providing an accessible user interface to authors with disabilities as well as by enabling, supporting, and promoting the production of accessible web content by all authors.User Agent Accessibility Guidelines (UAAG) 2.0 [UAAG]This document provides guidelines for designing user agents that lower barriers to web accessibility for people with disabilities. User agents include browsers and other types of software that retrieve and render web content. A user agent that conforms to these guidelines will promote accessibility through its own user interface and through other internal facilities, including its ability to communicate with other technologies (especially assistive technologies). Furthermore, all users, not just users with disabilities, should find conforming user agents to be more usable. 2 Common infrastructure This specification depends on Infra. [INFRA]
Image tracing also known as vectorization allows you to take an imported image such as a scanned drawing, graphic design or photo and to convert colors in that to vector outlines. These outlines can then be used as part of your design to create toolpaths or to generate 3D shapes using the modeling tools. The software will import many file formats including jpeg, bitmap, gif, png, tif, it will also extract images from a PDF file. 2ff7e9595c
